What is a Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is a great option for a variety of skin conditions, including sun spots, fine wrinkles and acne scars. This form of skin resurfacing utilizes either a fractionated CO2 laser or a fractionated erbium laser to remove dead skin cells, tighten skin, reduce pore size, blend uneven pigmentation and stimulate collagen production. The laser helps bring a new, healthy layer of skin to the surface, reducing the depth of scars and wrinkles while evening out skin tone and texture.
In Texas, laser skin resurfacing can be performed by an aesthetician. However, in our practice, they are always performed by a knowledgeable physician, meaning you get the best possible care.
If you’re a resident of Dallas, Richardson or Carrollton and you’re interested in learning more about laser skin resurfacing, look no further than Genecov Plastic Surgery Group. Our physicians are experienced in recommending the best procedures for your skin type. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have, including average laser treatment costs.
How is Laser Skin Resurfacing Performed?
The idea of “peeling” off layers of skin sounds painful, but most patients are surprised at how little discomfort they experience. To ensure that you do not feel any discomfort, a topical anesthetic cream is applied an hour prior to your procedure. For those who are very sensitive, nerve injection blocks can be used. Sedation also may be provided to reduce anxiety. Your eyes are shielded while your face is being treated and a soothing balm is applied immediately afterwards. The entire procedure lasts about half an hour.
Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?
We recommend that you avoid the sun, tanning beds, and microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and exfoliating treatment for one month prior to laser skin resurfacing. It’s also important that you do not have any injuries or burns on your skin prior to the procedure. Laser skin resurfacing is generally performed on patients over 35, but younger patients will also benefit from this procedure. At any age, caring for your skin correctly is vital to aging well.
What Kind of Post-Operative Laser Skin Resurfacing Care Can I Expect?
Many of the older laser treatments involved a significant amount of redness and swelling for 4 weeks or more. However, the newer laser techniques will leave your skin shiny and you will notice redness for 7 to 10 days. You will apply a soothing balm for four to five days after the procedure to help nourish your skin. During this time, you should only use a very gentle cleanser and a diluted vinegar wash four to five times per day is also key to a quick recovery.
Avoid using any harsh products, excessive sun exposure and exposure to chlorinated water for one month after the procedure. Men should not shave, as this will irritate your skin. The procedure is performed as outpatient surgery. If you had sedation, you will require a ride home. You may also require assistance for the first few days post-op, especially if there are young children in your home.
Your skin will start to peel in three to four days. Once your skin stops peeling, generally after another two days, you may return to your normal skin care routine and wearing make-up. You may wish to take up to a week off work, to avoid co-workers noticing your skin peeling. Vigorous activity and exposure to sunlight, even for short periods of time, should be avoided for 10 days. After a week, your skin may still be slightly pink, but otherwise back to normal. The redness and recovery time are typically less with an erbium laser treatment since this laser is not quite as aggressive as the fractionated CO2 laser.
After the procedure and the peeling is complete, sun protection is essential. We recommend an SPF of 40 or greater. Our staff will be happy to help you select the appropriate skin care products from our in-house product selection. Many patients achieve desired results with only one fractionated CO2 laser treatment whereas two or more treatments may be required with the erbium laser. Patients with severe sun damage, deep wrinkles, moderate to severe skin laxity, and those who smoke typically require multiple treatments to obtain the desired results.
